Tart Cherry Juice Could Help Improve Joint Symptoms
Researchers at Northumbria University, in Tyne, England, revealed a benefit of tart cherry juice concentrate that would reduce factors contributing to painful joints. In a single-blind, two-phase, randomized, crossover-designed study, Dr. Glyn Howatson and colleagues gave between 30 and 60 mL of tart cherry juice to 12 healthy participants twice daily for two days. Blood samples were then taken after 10 day washout separation of treatments both before and after the treatments. Reductions in both serum C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation and urate, which is elevated during gout attacks, were observed following consumption of either dose of tart cherry juice concentrate. Another study, revealed a positive effect also for tart cherry intake to reduce oxidative damage. Tart cherries are a unique fruit with a high concentration of anthocyanins, which are being further studied to possibly help fight against many other inflammatory diseases.
